What Does a Justice of the Peace do in Texas?
- Adjudicates Class C misdemeanors (punishable by fine only). This includes traffic, assault, disorderly conduct, and juvenile alcohol related offenses, among many others.
- Officiates over Small Claims Court, Debt Collection Court, and Eviction Court with a jurisdictional limit of $20,000.
- Serves as Chief Investigation officer of Death Inquest.
- Serves as Administrative Judge and Magistrate.
