What Does a Justice of the Peace do in Texas?
Adjudicates Class C misdemeanors (punishable by fine only). This includes traffic, assault, disorderly conduct, and juvenile alcohol related offenses, among many others.
Officiates over Small Claims Court, Debt Collection Court, and Eviction Court with a jurisdictional limit of $20,000.
Serves as Chief Investigation officer of Death Inquest.
